Waveguide filter is a kind of transmission line filter. Generally, waveguide filter is composed of discontinuities and transmission line segments. Both can be equivalent to corresponding lumped parameter elements and circuits, waveguide discontinuities provide equivalent reactance, transmission line segments equivalent resonators, etc.


Usually, waveguide filters can be constructed by directly coupling half wavelength resonators, but due to the influence of high-order modes, the second passband of this type of filter is very close, and the stopband performance at the high end of the frequency is poor. This can be improved by using a 1/4 wavelength transmission line coupled resonant diaphragm structure. By selecting the appropriate diaphragm size, each resonant diaphragm resonates at the same frequency, but has different Q values, which can make its second passband position farther, thus significantly improving its stopband characteristics.


In addition, the 1/4 wavelength transmission line coupled resonant diaphragm type (hereinafter referred to as resonant diaphragm type) filter also has the advantage of small size, and its total length is nearly 40% shorter than that of the directly coupled half wavelength resonator type (hereinafter referred to as half wavelength type). Compared with the half wavelength type, the size of the resonant diaphragm type bandpass filter is shortened by 38.4%, and has a wider stopband.

Waveguide filter is also used in various microwave multiplexers, but its biggest disadvantage is that its size is significantly larger than other resonators that can be used in the microwave band.
