Symmetrical Antenna

Introduction

The wire with two parts of equal length and disconnected and fed in the center can be used as transmitting and receiving antennas, and the antenna formed is called a symmetrical antenna. Because antennas are sometimes called oscillators, symmetrical antennas are also called symmetrical oscillators, or dipole antennas. A symmetrical oscillator with a total length of half a wavelength is called a half-wave oscillator, also called a half-wave dipole antenna. It is the most basic unit antenna, and it is also the most widely used, and many complex antennas are composed of it.

Principle

For a symmetrical antenna fed at a central point, the structure can be seen as an open transmission line open. According to the knowledge of microwave transmission lines, the parallel transmission line with an open terminal has a standing wave distribution on it, and if the ends of the two lines are open, the radiation will gradually increase. When the two wires are fully opened, the current direction on the two arms of the open is the same, the radiation is significantly enhanced, and the unopened part behind is used as the feed transmission line of the antenna.

Features

If the antenna is divided into two halves at the feeding point, and the geometry and size of the two halves are exactly the same, it is called a symmetric antenna, such as a diamond-shaped antenna, a fishbone antenna, etc. Otherwise, it is called an asymmetrical antenna. In order to increase the input impedance of a half-wave dipole antenna, a folded oscillator is often used, which can be seen as two half-wave oscillators that are coupled to each other much less than the wavelength.

Application

Due to their simple structure, the symmetrical antenna is widely used in radio technology equipment such as radar, communications, television and radio. The operating frequency of symmetrical oscillators ranges from shortwave to microwave. It can be used as an independent antenna, or as a basic unit of the antenna array to form a linear or planar array, and can also be used as a feed source for the reflective surface antenna. The half-wave oscillator has a simple structure, convenient feeding, and is widely used in short-range communication.
