Introduction
A lens horn antenna is an antenna capable of converting spherical or cylindrical waves of a point or line source into a plane wave by converting a point or line source into a plane wave to obtain a pen, sector or other shape beam. By properly designing the lens surface shape and refractive index n, the phase velocity of the electromagnetic wave is adjusted to obtain a planar wavefront over the radiation aperture.
Principle
Dielectric lenses are installed in front of various shapes of electromagnetic emitters to concentrate electromagnetic radiation energy into narrow beams. The lens is an electromagnetic spherical wave path released by a "lens" electromagnetic radiation source whose refractive index is not equal to 1 when electromagnetic waves pass through the "lens" and can be converted into plane waves to obtain a conical or cylindrical beam. The refractive index of a lens also tends to vary and can be a function of position. The structure of the lens affects its mouth surface field distribution.

Classification
There are two kinds of lens antennas: dielectric deceleration lens antenna and metal acceleration lens antenna.
Dielectric deceleration lens antenna
The dielectric reduction lens horn antenna is made of low-loss high-frequency dielectric, with a thick middle and a thin perimeter. Spherical waves emitted from a radiation source are slowed down as they pass through the dielectric lens. So the spherical wave has a long path to decelerations in the middle part of the lens and a short path to decelerations in the surrounding parts. Therefore, a spherical wave becomes a plane wave after passing through the lens, that is, the radiation becomes directional.
Metal acceleration lens antenna
Metal acceleration lens antennas are made up of many metal plates of different lengths placed in parallel. The metal plate is perpendicular to the ground, and the closer to the middle, the shorter the metal plate. Radio waves are accelerated as they propagate in parallel metal plates. As spherical waves emitted from the radiation source pass through a metal lens, the closer they are to the edge of the lens, the longer the path they are accelerated, and the shorter the path in the middle. Therefore, the spherical wave after passing through the metal lens becomes a plane wave.
Peculiarity
Compared with ordinary antennas, lens horn antenna has unique characteristics: First, the side lobes and back lobes of lens antennas are small, and their directional pattern is better; Second, the lens antenna does not have high requirements for the accuracy of manufacturing lenses, so the manufacture is relatively simple and convenient. However, lens antennas also have their own shortcomings: first, low production efficiency; Second, it is not easy to construct and is more complicated, and third, the cost is relatively high.
