Biconical Antenna

Introduction

Biconical antenna is similar to dipole antenna, except that they have conical elements. They also have an integrated balun (balance-to-unbalance) structure whose impedance matches the components of the transmission line. Some baluns are made for high power capability suitable for immunity testing. In most cases, these lightweight antennas have removable elements for easy storage.

Principle

(1) The infinitely long double cone, because the current extends infinitely, is no longer a standing wave antenna, and the radiation resistance is independent of frequency.

(2) Finite length double cone, no analytical formula. A qualitative explanation is that currents of different frequencies can always find a suitable length on the surface of the double cone, thus achieving inconsistent electrical length at different frequencies, that is, equivalent length compensation.

Structure

A biconical antenna consists of two cones with opposite cone tops, at which power is fed. Ces can be constructed of metal faces, wires or meshes. Just like a cage antenna, the antenna frequency band widens as the broken area of the antenna increases. Double-cone antennas are mainly used for ultra-short wave reception. Double-cone antennas with large cone angles, or disc cone antennas evolved from it, belong to the category of broadband antennas, and they have been widely used in VHF and frequency bands.

Application

Biconical antenna is considered the workhorse of every compliance test laboratory standard.
