NTC Temperature Sensor

Introduction

The NTC temperature sensor is a thermistor and probe whose principle is that the resistance value decreases rapidly as the temperature rises. It usually consists of 2 or 3 metal oxides mixed in a fluid-like clay and calcined in a high-temperature furnace into a densely sintered ceramic. Actual size is very flexible, they can be as small as 0.010 inches or very small diameters. There is almost no limit to the maximum size, but generally, less than half an inch applies.

Principle

Using an NTC thermistor under a certain measurement power, the resistance value decreases rapidly as the temperature rises. Using this feature, the NTC thermistor can determine the corresponding temperature by measuring its resistance value, so as to achieve the purpose of detecting and controlling the temperature.

Performance introduction

NTC temperature sensor typically consists of 2 or 3 metal oxides mixed in a fluid-like clay and calcined in a high-temperature furnace to form a densely sintered ceramic. Oxygen-linked metals tend to donate free electrons. Ceramics are generally excellent insulators.

This is only theoretically the case with thermistor-type ceramics when the temperature is close to absolute zero. However, as the temperature increases into the more common range, thermal excitation throws away more and more free electrons.

As many electron carriers pass through the ceramic, the effective resistance decreases. Resistance is extremely sensitive to changes in temperature. Typical variation is (-)7[%] to 3[%] reduction per degree Celsius. This is the most sensitive of any sensor suitable for use over a wide temperature range.
